Using this life-changing moment and the Jet Age itself as a starting point for his Resort 2020 collection, Ghesquière has taken the concept further, weaving in the joy of discovery and the love of travel that are at the heart of the Louis Vuitton brand.

Presented at the newly transformed TWA Hotel, Resort 2020 sees Ghesquière expanding on his experimentation with volume, plucking mid-century lines from Saarinen’s sweeping concrete structure and injecting them with an ‘80s essence. Panels of feathers or crystal-studded lace slice through a number of the looks, creating tough–chic silhouettes.

Not one to be boxed in by a single concept, the designer was also influenced by the city’s legendary Art Deco buildings, Wall Street, neon signs, and other New York staples. Sophisticated prints grab imagery from architectural landmarks; sharply tailored pantsuits and shirtdresses boast a modernized stockbroker vibe; and acidic hues recall Manhattan’s brilliant lights.

Meanwhile bags—linchpins of the House—have all the markings of icons. Graphic logo’d hardware on the Dauphine and retro-style tags on the Petite Boîte Chapeau reinforce that quintessential traveller spirit.

“It’s about the rediscovering of an uncommon place that yet is a part of American heritage.”

— Nicolas Ghesquière, Artistic Director, Louis Vuitton
